02 MARCH 2020 | GOLD HILL, OR. — Wenonoa Spivak joined the Siskiyou Mountain Club board of directors in April of 2019 and holds the position of board secretary. Wenonoa works full time for Jackson County. She holds a B.S. in Public Health,a Master’s in Education, and is a doctoral candidate in Applied Linguistics. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Honduras, Central America, working in public health.
This experience instilled in her a belief in and dedication to social service and helping those most marginalized and at-risk. Wenonoa worked in Texas as a domestic and sexual violence advocate and a social worker for families afflicted by substance abuse disorder.
Wenonoa was a DHS/CPS case worker in Arizona. After moving to Oregon in 2005, she worked as a hospice educator, a hospital medical interpreter, and a college-level Spanish instructor in Salem. Wenonoa then moved back overseas and worked in the Federated States of Micronesia teaching college-level ESL.
Returning to the states, she was a university-level ESL and English professor in Ohio while working on her doctorate. Wenonoa has presented at many conference and trainings locally and nationally on bias, culture, oppression, and technical writing. In her free time, Wenonoa enjoys mountain biking, snowshoeing, and hiking.
