Dispatch: June 22, 2014

Pic22 June 2014 | Brookings, OR– Our seasonal youth crew (Chetco 1) has broken through to Box Canyon Creek, 10-miles from the Vulcan Lake Trailhead. The entire route from Vulcan Lake Trailhead to Box Canyon Camp is now is clear and passable for the first time since the 2002 Biscuit Fire. There are still some “step over” logs and short brushy sections, especially near Johnson Butte. Crew pic
The crew had been camping at a mosquito-infested spring about two-miles from their new camp, working to clear downed trees and tunnels of brush that had left the trail impassable.

They’ve crosscut over 170 trees and brushed over a mile of trail since June 16. The crew has had exceptional weather, with highs not breaking into the 90s.Crew pic
We need help packing 120lbs of food and supplies into Chetco 1 next week. The more volunteers we recruit, the lighter our packs will be and the more “treats” we’ll be able to bring them. We need help for a trip June 26 – 29. Email howegabe@gmail.com or call 541-708-2056 for details and to sign up.
