6 September 2015 | Ashland, OR — Find wild this fall, in the wilderness, hiking and working.

Hikes


  • September 17 – 20 Hike from the famous lower Rogue River into the 35,000 acre encompassing it. The hike start from Marial, OR with a long ascent up the Mule Creek Trail. Then ride along Panther Ridge where there are contiguous stands of ancient old growth, and drop down Clay Hill, through black oak forests, dreamy meadows and historic sites. Hike back to Marial via the Rogue River Trail. The SMC shuttle leaves Ashland, OR at 8:30am with rendezvous options in Medford, Grants Pass and Merlin. We’ll be back to Ashland by 6pm on September 20.

  • September 24 – 29 Backpack 42 miles through Oregon’s notorious Kalmiopsis wilderness area. This challenging trek will take you to the upper reaches of the Chetco River, to two mountain lakes, seven botanical areas, and along the majestic serpentine ridges connecting them all. The SMC shuttle leaves Ashland, OR on September 24 at 7am with rendezvous options in Medford, Grants Pass and Selma. We’ll be back to Selma by 5pm on the 29th.

  • October 17Hike 5.5 miles along the Siskiyou Crest on our adopted section of the Pacific Crest Trail, Soda Mountain Wilderness. You’ll get dropped off at Pilot Rock in the SMC van and hike eastward (PCT north) to Baldy Creek Road, where we’ll be picked up. The van leaves Ashland at 8am and we should be back by 2pm.

  • October 25 Join us for a wild adventure in Ashland’s Soda Mountain Wilderness. We will start from Pilot Rock and hike on and off trail over a 6 mile loop. Check out massive ponderosa pine stands, oak savanna, and learn the basics of navigating off trail. The SMC van leaves Ashland at 8am and we will be back by 5pm.

  • December 13-14 Join the SMC for our annual bonfire campout. Location to be determined.
  • February 13 – 15, 2016 We’re throwing the dice and betting on another false spring in February 2016 to backpack the 26 mile Rogue loop. We’ll start from Panther Ridge Trailhead near Buck Point, hike down Clay Hill Trail, up the famous Rogue River canyon, and up Mule Creek back to Panther Ridge. Explore the rugged tributaries and ridges that encompass this famous wilderness.

  • October 3 The trail from Frog Pond to Cameron Meadows is spectacular. But it’s been misaligned and lost along many sections. Come help us recover it. The van leaves Ashland at 8am with rendezvous option in Medford, Jacksonville and Ruch. We’ll head up to the Red Buttes highcountry and hike two tough miles into the work site. We’ll be back to the trailhead by 5pm.

  • October 11 A long section of the Kalmiopsis Rim Trail 1124 beneath Whetstone Butte has brushed in with thick “buck brush,” plaguing hikers seeking something truly wild in this 180,000-acre wilderness. Come help us finish brushing the trail from Onion Camp Trailhead north to Eagle Gap. The shuttle leaves Ashland at 8am with rendezvous options in Medford, Grants Pass and Selma. We’ll be back to Ashland by 6pm.

  • November 27 Ditch the mall, forget the deals, and help brush out the Middle Fork Applegate National Recreation Trail on Black Friday. The van shuttle leaves Ashland at 8am with rendezvous options in Medford, Jacksonville, and Ruch. We’ll be back to Ashland by 6pm.
