Meet the Crew Barbecue Fundraiser

Meet our 2017 crew: June 29, 5pm – 8pm at Lithia Park (Ashland, Ore.)

20 JUNE 2017 | ASHLAND, ORE. — Join the Siskiyou Mountain Club crew Thursday, June 29 at Lithia Park (Ashland, Ore.) for a barbecue fundraiser.

The event is at the Madrone Picnic Area, just across the creek from the upper duck pond. Enjoy hot dogs, burgers, and seasonal sides prepared by the SMC board of directors. At 6:30pm watch our interns compete at the crosscut saw.

Intern Jenna Comstock is flying in from California on Thursday morning. “I’m excited to meet everyone,” she says. She admits she’s nervous. “About poison oak, mosquitoes,” Comstock notes. “And stamina.”

Karly White of Pennsylvania has been in Portland for about a week visiting her aunt. We spoke during a break she had volunteering at the Hoyt Arboretum there. She’s also excited to meet the crew: “I have high hopes.” She’s nervous about the crosscut saw competition next Thursday.

White is most excited to see the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. “I’ve heard fantastic things. I’m pretty stoked.”

Comstock and White will be joined by six other interns, three trail staff, two crew leaders, and our field coordinator. We’ve split this year’s group into two smaller crews. They’ll be working 10 days at a time on completely self supported trail hitches in the Siskiyou, Sky Lakes, Red Buttes, and Sky Lakes Wilderness Areas.

2017 intern Zac Wilner is returning as a crew leader

The crew will be keeping video journals, and reading everyday. In July they have a breakout week. During that time the crew goes rafting, does a backpacking trip without tools, and meets with hiring managers from the area for advice on landing jobs in the outdoors.

The summer starts with an intense multi-day field training. On their last day, they hike out and head straight for the Meet the Crew Barbecue.

“I want to see it all,” says Comstock.

Come meet our 2017, wish them luck, and support their season. Please bring your own picnic ware (plate, silverware, cup). Email info@siskiyoumountainclub.org to RSVP for your party, or call or text 541-708-2056.

We still must raise over $4,500 to round out this year’s operating budget. Make a donation.
