Hiring for visitor services position

14 MAY 2018 | ASHLAND, ORE. — We are hiring a visitor services manager to help run our Hiking Center in beautiful downtown Ashland, Oregon. Siskiyou Mountain Club stewards 250+ miles of trails throughout the region. You will provide help to visitors looking for a hike or backpacking trip, and offer education on Leave No Trace and Wilderness ethics. Includes other development and administrative tasks. The position is part time and runs June 1, 2018 – September 15, 2018, with the possibility of extension.

The right person will have strong communication skills and be able to carry stimulating conversation. We seek candidates that are fiercely passionate about Wilderness, trails, and our mission. We value critical and creative thinkers, and value feedback from our staff. Your experience will help inform the organization’s values, strategy, and vision.

We will work with you to determine static hours for the visitor center, and we can accommodate some time off for summer plans. After that, we need you to stick to the hours religiously, and be here when the center is open. You will be managing our visitor center and representing our organization. That is a front and center roll you should be excited to take on.

Pay: Starts at $13 per hour. Opportunities for quick raise to individual who can take on higher level tasks.
Hours: Starting at 16 hours per week. June 1 – September 15, 2018.
Reports to Executive Director


Duties

  • Maintain visitor center. Keep the shop tidy, orderly, and update signage regulary. Track inventory of maps, pictures, books, and other materials.
  • Visitor services. Provide professional service to visitors looking for hiking and backpacking opportunities. Sell maps and memberships and collect visitor information.
  • Event planning. Help plan social and stewardship events.
  • Social media. Develop SMC Instagram and Twitter accounts that interact with a very active Facebook and e-newsletter.
  • Membership and volunteer development. Communicate via phone, in person, and by email regularly with members and volunteers.
  • Maintain trails database. Collect data from field staff and volunteers, and integrate into live GIS database.
  • Administrative tasks. Receive mail and run bank deposits. Send acknowledgment letters and other mailing duties.
  • Lots of hats. We are a small nonprofit that runs on the spirit of service. We all wear many hats to keep things going. You’ll be expected to do the same, and step up when the call of service rings.


    Qualifications

  • Outstanding interpersonal skills. Ability to connect with anybody and persuade them to go hiking.
  • Astute learner. You will be performing a diversity of tasks. You’ve got to be excited about picking them up.
  • Basic computer skills are a must. You should be able to build a functional spreadsheet. Experience with Google Docs, WordPress, and Adobe Illustrator are a huge plus.
  • Manage your time wisely. You will be in here along much of the time, and we expect you to keep yourself busy with productive tasks.
  • Passion. You’ve got to care about what it is we’re doing.
