for the Siskiyou Hiker
There’s nothing more patriotic than giving it your all to help keep our National Forests alive
31 MAY 2019 | CRESCENT CITY, CA. — Join us over an extended holiday weekend to help rebuild a forlorn section of the Kelsey National Recreation Trail. We’re looking for volunteers who are in shape and are ready for a long, steep hike into the remote project site. Email karly@siskiyoumountainclub.org for details and to sign up.
Backpack a few miles into a camp along the South Fork Smith River, and then day hike into the project site.
This stunning section of trail ascends from the dreamy South Fork Smith River to a defining ridge that needs to be brushed out and re-treaded. Right now, this un-maintained section constitutes an impenetrable chokehold on a wider complex of trails that traverses the enchanting Siskiyou Wilderness Area. Come help fill the gap and put yourself to the test on this strenuous trip.
The landscape is scenic. The route is strategic. The work is very much needed, and there are few thins more patriotic than giving it your all to public lands this Independence Day.
We provide tools, safety gear, training, leadership, transportation, and a meal out after the project is done. Just email karly@siskiyoumountainclub.org for details and to sign up.
Background
Tucked away in the Smith River National Recreation Area, the 182,000 acre Siskiyou Wilderness is defined by commanding ridge systems, deep forests, and rugged canyons. Home to black bear, wolverine, fisher, cougar, and black-tailed deer, this federal wilderness is among the most wild in North America.
This National Recreation Trail was a historic pack route connecting the gold rush towns of Yreka and Crescent City California. It has been largely restored, but this section constitutes an impenetrable gap. Just email karly@siskiyoumountainclub.org for details and to sign up.
