Title: Assistant Crew Leader

We are a small nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving trails in the backcountry of Southwest Oregon and Northwest California. Our trail crews have saved hundreds of trail miles from being lost, and we have adopted approximately 400 miles of trails in the most remote reaches in this region known for its vast expanse of public lands.

Job Description
Assistant Crew Leaders commit to the duration of their term to support the Club’s Corps program. They work a rigorous schedule on backcountry trail projects that run up to three-weeks-long and are responsible for tasks in between work hitches. They provide exceptional trail skills and can be counted on to produce results independently and in group settings. They flex into roles as needed and support daily operation of our field crews through strong leadership and communication. They manage Wilderness Corps Interns, staff teams, and volunteers.
Terms
The 2024 field season runs April 1 – October 31 with flexible terms for the right candidate. Pay is $16 – $18.45 per hour with plenty of opportunities for overtime. Reports to Crew Leader.
Job Summary
Crew leaders commit to the duration of their term to support the Club’s Corps Program. They help manage daily stewardship operations with primarily Corps crews, but may find themselves on different crew types including our Strike Team and help with volunteer trips. They help direct and supervise interns on multi-day work hitches and are a primary resource to crew leaders who set daily and project objectives. Assistant crew leaders leaders flex into roles as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
Field Leadership
- Work from remote backcountry locations on an array of trail projects
- Perform daily work tasks including brushing, logging, and tread stabilization
- Provide quality control and deliver instruction and feedback to interns and staff
- Offer thorough instruction and guidance to interns and staff
- Field scouting, monitoring, and work planning
- Help manage 1st-aid situations and other emergencies
- Support Crew Leader to supervise Corps Crews
- Ensure staff and interns are prepared for work hitches
Communication
- Responsible for maintaining SMC’s communication protocols
- Deliver strong verbal communication in individual and group settings
- Draft field reports, pre-trip and post-trip communications
- Follow detailed instructions from supervisors
- Provide mentorship to interns to ensure quality and productivity targets are being met
- Address personnel issues
- Provide communication support for crew leader
Maintenance, training, and other duties
- Ensure vehicles and tools are maintained, cleaned, organized
- Responsible for training intern crews
- Other duties as assigned
Required Skills and Experience
- Demonstrated leadership and communication abilities
- At least one season of backcountry trail experience
- Must be comfortable working from backcountry hike-in locations with no amenities for up to three weeks
- Ability to carry 50 pounds for 10 miles across rough terrain
- Strong trail skills including brushing, treading, drainage work, proper saw use
- Ability to learn new tools and tasks quickly
- Must be strong at utilizing feedback to alter or improve performance
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Punctuality and ability to work long and odd hours
- Enthusiastic to work holidays and weekends
- First Aid/CPR
- Clean driving record and ability to pass SMC driving test
- Basic computer skills
