Job Description
Strike Team Crew Members are responsible for providing production support to our Strike Team, a small crew of staff that takes on projects that call for technical skills, professional performance, and experienced crew members that operate with an emphasis on project deliverables.

Terms
Schedule has some flexibility for the ideal candidate. April 1, 2024 through September 30, 2024 with opportunities to stay through October for interested parties. Members are allowed one (unpaid) two-week-long vacation. Pay starts at $16.45 per hour. The ideal candidate is eager for advancement and in pursuit of multiple seasons. Position includes up to 1,100 hours regular time and up to 500 hours over time. Reports to Lead Program Manager.

Job Summary
Crew Members commit to the duration of their term to support the Club’s Strike Team program and manage daily stewardship operations with their crew. Strike Team Members flex into roles as needed to support field crews through exceptional communication and sharing of backcountry trails skills. Supporting the Strike Team Crew is their primary responsibility, but Crew Members may help provide leadership for interns and other staff on alternative crews within the Field Program.


Duties and Responsibilities

Field Leadership

  • Maintain trails to Siskiyou Mountain Club and agency standards
  • Work from remote backcountry locations on an array of trail projects
  • Help achieve daily goals that align with project objectives developed by Program Managers
  • Assume responsibility for completing advanced tasks associated with projects
  • Field scouting, monitoring, and work planning
  • Help manage 1st-aid situations and other emergencies

Communication

  • Responsible for maintaining SMC’s communication protocols
  • Deliver strong verbal communication in individual and group settings
  • Draft field reports, pre-trip and post-trip communications
  • Follow detailed instructions from supervisors
  • Provide mentorship to interns if interfacing with Wilderness Corps Crew
  • Address personnel issues
  • Provide communication support for Strike Team Lead

Maintenance, training, and other duties

  • Ensure vehicles and tools are maintained, organized
  • Coordinate to help maintain tool cache
  • Provide input for organizational and program development
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Maintain stewardship database with details


Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum one season backcountry trails experience
  • Crosscut “B- Bucking” Certified, or ability to certify at the “B” level by June 1, 2024
  • Ability to carry 50 pounds for 10 miles across rough terrain
  • Must be comfortable working from backcountry hike-in locations with no amenities for up to eight days
  • Strong trail skills including brushing, treading, drainage work, proper saw use
  • Ability to learn new tools and tasks quickly
  • Must be strong at utilizing feedback to alter or improve performance
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Punctuality and ability to work long and odd hours
  • Enthusiastic about working holidays and weekends
  • Ability to work independently in remote settings
  • Strong decision-making skills and thorough follow through
  • First Aid/CPR certified, or willingness to participate in SMC-sponsored class
  • Clean driving record and ability to pass SMC driving test
  • Basic computer skills
