Five awesome things about Babyfoot Lake
for the Siskiyou hiker
by Gabe Howe, executive director
15 July 2015 | Kerby, OR — Siskiyou Mountain Club maintains the trail to Babyfoot Lake every year. Here’s five reasons you should go:
1. It’s cool. Cradled on the north aspect of a cirque at 4000 feet elevation, Babyfoot Lake stays cool and shady.
2. Swimming. The water is outstanding and warms up quite a bit in the summer. It’s clear, clean and dreamy.
3. Recovery. The 2002 Biscuit Fire blasted through this area, leaving a lot of contiguous crown mortality to the forest. Watching the recovery is like being present for an ecosystem’s childhood. I’ve learned so much using this area as a lens to explore.
4. Easy hike. It’s a gentle 1.25 miles from the trailhead.
5. The back alleys. There’s some secret back doors around Babyfoot Lake, including some discrete campsites and other compelling natural features.
Hike there this weekend with us.
Van leaves Ashland, OR at 8am on Saturday, July 18, with rendezvous options in Medford, Grants Pass and Selma. We’ll be back to Ashland by 3pm on Sunday.
