Red Buttes: January 10 Logout/Re-Tread

January 10, 2015: Help clear the Frog Pond Trail

The trail to Frog Pond is a steep 2-mile jaunt through groves of rare conifers and massive old growth. Frog Pond is a vast cirque lined with grassy meadows. But the trail has about 20 trees down on it, and likely more with recent storms. The steepest sections of it are channeling, and switchbacks need to be widened.

Come give us a hand this Saturday, January 10. We’re betting that there will be some snow, but the road will still be passable. If our bet is wrong, we will work on another trail a little lower in elevation in the Red Buttes.

The weather service is calling for sun, highs around 47 F’ at the elevation we’ll be at, and a good time with a great crew.

Carpools leave Ashland’s Hardwired Building (340 ‘A’ St) at 8:30am on Saturday, and we’ll be back by 6pm. There is an option to rendezvous in Medford, Jacksonville, or Star Ranger Station. Participants need to come prepared. Dress for the weather, bring enough food and H20 for the day. Wear long pants and sturdy hiking boots.

The following week we will be working on the other side of this trail, with the goal of maintaining the entire route before spring/summer hiking season comes.
