SISKIYOU MOUNTAIN CLUB HIRING PAID-INTERNS TO WORK SUMMER 2015 ON WILDERNESS CORPS TRAIL CREW
Ashland, OR — The SMC is hiring college students to work the summer of 2015 on projects throughout southwest Oregon’s federal wilderness areas: the Wild Rogue, Kalmiopsis, Soda Mountain and Red Buttes.
The crew of 5-10 will participate in a week-long, unpaid orientation June 19-25. June 29 they will go to work 10-days at a time with four days off in between each work hitch until August 19. Outstanding participants may be invited to participate in a 5th hitch in September.
Each crew member is compensated a $40 per-diem that is paid out monthly. After finishing the program, each crew member receives a $1,600 academic award distributed to their college for tuition or payment of debt. The academic award must be used for a non-profit, fully accredited institution. Participants who are invited to participate in the fifth 10-day hitch will receive an additional $1,200 for college.
This is a paid, experiential pathway for college students eager for a career in wilderness management, natural resources, and other related fields. Each crew member will learn advanced wilderness management techniques, and how to live and work in the backwoods while effectively manage a working crew.
Applicants should be in good physical shape and able to walk for 10 miles over rough terrain carrying up to 50lbs. Crew members must be able to work and live in remote, primitive environments and be comfortable with no access to communication technology. Tobacco and cellular phones are not allowed while on the trail.
