Kalmiopsis Wilderness: Sign Up Now

End your summer with a bang and a splash:

Come hike the Trans-Kalmiopsis Route with a purpose

This late summer is your chance to explore the heart of the Kalmiopsis, a wilderness area that receives a lot of attention but not many visits.

We need your help bringing in supplies to our crew and performing general maintenance tasks along this iconic 26-mile network of trails that had been impassable until this summer.

Hike along Southwest Oregon’s most rugged and remote ridges down to the Chetco River and its tributaries. Email howegabe(a)gmail.com or call 541-708-2056 for further details and to sign-up.

Aug 22 – 24 Pack light and help bring food and supplies to our trail crew, who will be working for about two weeks straight in the wilderness. We may work on some brushing and tread projects if time allows. Catch views as far as the Pacific and swim in Vulcan Lake. Carpools leave Brookings, OR on the 22 and we’ll be back on the 24. Difficult.

Aug 29 – 31 On Friday we’ll backpack food and supplies about 10 miles into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness from Vulcan Lake Trailhead to a remote camp. We’ll stay one night with the crew and help them move camp or assist with group projects. Sunday we’ll hike back to Vulcan Lake. Carpools leave Brookings, OR on the 29. Difficult.

September 5 – 8 Help restore the loop around Babyfoot Lake and greet our crew as they arrive back to civilization. We’ll work on the Babyfoot Lake Trail the 5-7 and hike out with the crew on the 8th. Moderate to difficult.

September 17 – 23 Backpack all 26-miles of the Trans-Kalmiopsis Route. We’ll brush and logout the last bits of the route, focus on restoring switchbacks, hang signs, and cut the ribbon. Be here for this momentous volunteer trip that is possible because of four-years of hard work.
