In 2012 when Rose Averbeck signed up as an SMC volunteer to fill practicum hours for Southern Oregon University’s Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree, she had no idea what she was getting into.

That August she hiked nine rough miles into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness Area. “It was the most remote wilderness I’ve ever been in,” says Averbeck. “It was hot.”
She spent over a week restoring trails along the Chetco River’s emerald upper reaches. That year Averbeck fulfilled her practicum hours.
In 2013 Averbeck’s experience helped her land work as a rafting guide in Klamath Falls.
Now she’s back working to build our database of potential donors, fulfilling practicum hours for a business degree to accompany her leadership skills.
“I want to help get others into the wilderness,” she says. “The SMC matches up with my values.”
