Job Description
Strike Team Leads are responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of our Strike Team, a small crew of staff that takes on projects that call for technical skills, professional performance, and experienced crew members that operate with an emphasis on project deliverables. The Strike Team Lead works in the field with crew members and is also responsible for coordination activities between work hitches.
Terms
Schedule has some flexibility for the right candidate. Position runs March 15, 2024 through September 30, 2024, with opportunities to stay through October for interested parties. Employees are allowed at least one (unpaid) two-week-long vacation. Pay is $20 per hour. Position includes up to 1,200 hours regular time and up to 500 hours over time. The ideal candidate is eager for advancement and in pursuit of multiple seasons. Reports to Lead Program Manager.

Job Summary
Strike Team Leads commit to the duration of their term to support the Club’s Strike Team program and manage daily stewardship operations with their crew of experienced crew members. They direct and supervise staff on multi-day work hitches. Strike Team Leads flex into roles as needed to support field crews through exceptional communication and sharing of backcountry trails skills. Managing the Strike Team Crew is their primary responsibility, but Leads may help provide leadership for interns and other staff that interface with Strike Team Crew.
Duties and Responsibilities
Field Leadership
- Manage strike team. Includes trip preparation, on-the-ground project execution, and followup and reporting
- Collect field data to develop efficient itineraries and planning required to lead successful work hitches
- Responsibility for maintaining diligent safety protocols
- Ensure all reports are well supported and prepared for projects
- Provide in-depth field training for staff on tool use, backcountry skills, safety, and general trail maintenance
- Maintain trails to Siskiyou Mountain Club and agency standards
- Set daily goals that align with project objectives developed by Program Managers
- Assume responsibility for completing advanced tasks associated with projects
Communication
- Serve as the Strike Team’s primary liaison. Coordinate projects with staff and partners.
- Deliver verbal briefings, debriefings, and regular feedback in group and individual situations
- Provide guidance, direction, training and feedback to staff reports
- Lead scheduled reviews for staff
- Provide succinct information to SMC management and staff
- Identify, report, and address personnel issues
- Provide detailed project reports that include geographic data, photos, and other information requested
Maintenance, training, and other duties
- Ensure vehicles and tools are maintained and organized
- Coordinate to help maintain tool cache
- Provide input for program development
- Other duties as assigned
- Maintain stewardship database and provide project details
Required Skills and Experience
- Minimum two seasons backcountry trails experience
- Crosscut Bucking “B” or “C” Certified, and/or ability to certify at the “C” level by June 1, 2024
- Ability to carry 50 pounds for 10 miles across rough terrain
- Must be comfortable working from backcountry hike-in locations with no amenities for up to eight days
- Ability to supervise staff and deliver regular feedback, including critical feedback, to staff reports
- Ability to set realistic goals and motivate, inspire staff reports
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff, partners, and agency representatives
- Problem solving skills and strong flexibility
- Ability to facilitate and lead effective conversations with small groups
- One-on-one communication skills
- Punctuality and ability to work long and odd hours
- Enthusiastic to work holidays and weekends
- Ability to work independently in remote settings
- Strong decision-making skills and thorough follow through
- Ability to coordinate and work alongside partners
- Wilderness 1st Aid/CPR certified, or willingness to participate in SMC-sponsored class in March, 2024
- Clean driving record and ability to pass SMC driving test
- Strong computer skills
