27 MARCH 2022 | BROOKINGS, OR. — In a remote recess of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, a trail winds up the north bank of the Upper Chetco River and deep into the Kalmiopsis Wilderness. It’s the Tincup Trail 1117, a historic gem that provides arterial access for hikers, equestrians, hunters, boaters, and other trail users including wildland firefighters who use have used the trail for direct attack to keep small blazes just that.
But one of those wildfires didn’t stay small, and in 2017 the Chetco Bar Fire burned this trail to a crisp. In the ensuing years, brush has exploded into the trail prism, choking the Tincup trail to death. We’re opening a section of it back up this April 11 – 15 and we need volunteers to help.

Briefings start each morning at 7am and anyone can participate. You don’t need trails experience, but you should be ready for a full day of following “power brushers.” These are like weed-whackers with ninja stars at the end that penetrate thick brush. You’ll be picking up the brush and throwing it off the trail.

We need to open up this section of the trail for our Wilderness Corps who will hike further in later this season to cut open the trail from Boulder Creek confluence to the Johnson Butte Trail 1110.

All you need is some food, water, basic apparel, and a willingness to help out. Come one, more, or all of the days. Our crew will be camped out at the trailhead, and you’re welcome to join us there. Email info@siskiyoumountainclub.org now for details and to register.
